Ziplining has been on our bucket list for several years but we never managed to fit it in on any of our vacations, until Whistler. I’m glad we waited because Whistler, British Columbia offers an incredible setting for this thrilling adrenaline rush.
We booked our reservation with Superfly Ziplines, Whistler’s only backcountry zipline located in gorgeous mountain wilderness. They feature 2 of Canada’s longest tandem ziplines, a kilometer long, 500 feet high, and reaching speeds of 100km/hour. Their office was conveniently located just steps away from our Sundial Boutique Hotel right in the heart of the village. Like our hotel and rental car, we booked the reservation with Chase Ultimate Rewards points, so didn’t have to spend a dollar on this fun activity. The regular price for their 3 hour zipline experience is $129 Canadian dollars, which turns out to be about $90 in American currency with today’s conversion rate. However, if you meet the salary requirements and are willing to attend a 90 minute Club Intrawest sales presentation, you can earn $200 toward Superfly Ziplines or their Treetop Adventures. It seems like a pretty good trade off to me, giving 90 minutes of time in order to fly through the rainforests of Whistler for free (or for only $58 Canadian dollars if there are two of you).
Let me get back to our experience. They shuttled us up to Cougar Mountain, where our super fun guides Krystel and Brett were waiting for us in the position below- Brett riding on Krystel’s shoulders. We knew right away that this was going to be fun since they obviously have a great sense of humor. When we started cracking up, they knew that we were going to be fun too. We came prepared in our matching Superman shirts since Bertaut has a superman obsession and is slightly delusional about being the superhero. I’m a mental health therapist, so I know. 😉 Bertaut even wore his Superman cape, but sadly he wasn’t able to let it fly in the wind while ziplining for safety reasons. They were afraid it might fly up and get caught in the line, which could be very dangerous, even for Superman.
Our awesome guides gave us a quick tutorial of how to operate the equipment and got us fitted in our gear. Then we climbed on to an ATV and rode up to the first zipline, getting some beautiful views on the way and information about the area.
Once again, like our helicopter ride over Whistler, we paid the normal price but lucked out and ended up with a private tour at no extra cost. The group that went before us had about 15 people, but we were the only ones in our group, so had the undivided attention of our guides. We can’t say enough good things about Krystel and Brett, who took photos and videos for us on each and every zipline we flew. Talk about VIP treatment. Plus did I mention how much fun they were? They had us laughing and smiling the whole 3 hours. If we lived there, we’d definitely want to hang out. Another perk was that we had no waiting since it was just the two of us and our guides, which added to the romance of the experience. We were there celebrating our 9 yr wedding anniversary, so the privacy made the experience much more memorable. This photo below was at the top of the first zipline and shows the breathtaking scenery that we enjoyed while flying through the air as superman and superwoman.
After a moment of fear and thinking “Why the hell did I think this would be fun?”, I braved my anxiety and butterflies in my stomach and pushed off into the abyss of alpine forest. I went first since I was lighter and would travel slower than Bertaut. Superman caught up with me and left me in his dust. I cannot tell your how exhilarating it was to fly over the treetops while looking down at the huge distance between us and the ground. My stomach still does a little flip when I think about it. It was incredible, and any adrenaline junkie must experience it!
We had to insert the arrows below because otherwise you might not be able to find us in the photo. We were tiny specks in the vast backcountry backdrop, flying down the lines hundreds of feet above ground gazing out at the unbeatable views of mountains and alpine rainforest canopy.
We had these breathtaking views of the mountains from one of the platforms and were as high as the clouds. The air was incredibly fresh out there.
We couldn’t resist the urge to be tree-huggers as we were immersed in the wilderness.
We had a few more laughs as we posed as a family of bears back with our guide Krystel at the base on Cougar Mountain.
So if you haven’t tried ziplining yet but have been curious to try it, we encourage you to go for it! I sometimes get scared climbing up tall ladders when I look down, and I’ll admit I thought about backing out before that first line when I looked down from the platform. Instead I went for it and am so glad I braved my fear because it was a once in a lifetime experience in the mountains of Whistler. We haven’t ziplined with any other companies or anywhere else yet, but we highly recommend Superfly Ziplines in Whistler for an unforgettable experience. Ask for Krystel and Brett if you want to laugh the whole time (except for when you are screaming in excitement, because you will do a lot of that too!) Let your inner superhero shine like we did and wear a costume, but don’t forget to tuck in your cape. Where is the best place you’ve ziplined?
