Feeling very cultured after visiting Milan’s top attractions and relaxed after enjoying the Emirates Lounge at Milan’s Malpensa Airport, we stepped aboard the Boeing 777 for the next part of our amazing journey to the Maldives. Bertaut scored us First Class suites again using credit card points (more to come on how he did that) so we fell back into the lap of luxury for the next 6 hours on our way to Dubai. The first class suites on the Boeing 777 are not much different than their newer Airbus A380 with privacy doors that close you off from the aisle and from your travel companion if desired. The seats recline fully into a bed but do not have massage capabilities like the A380. Each suite is equipped with a desk, charging outlet, TV, multiple lamps and light sources, vanity mirror, writing pad, mini bar, basket of snacks, and control panel for all the electronic gadgets.
Some major differences between the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 777 are the number of First Class suites, the bathrooms and the lack of a lounge and bar on the Boeing 777. The Airbus A380 boasts 14 First Class suites vs 8 on the Boeing 777. The bathrooms on the Boeing 777 are your typical airline bathrooms- small with the basics of toilet and sink, but kept very clean and with Bulgari products at your disposal to freshen up. They also provide cloth towels instead of paper towels to dry your hands or face, which is a nice touch. After flying on the luxurious Airbus A380, it was tough going back to the typical airplane bathroom, especially when I was changing into my pajamas and didn’t have much space to move around. I think the Airbus A380’s shower spa bathroom spoiled me for life.
The flight attendants on the Boeing 777 were excellent at making sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable and luxurious flight. We started off with glasses of Veuve Cliquot champagne, and then upgraded to Dom Perignon after take-off. They provided warm towels to wash our hands and comfy pajamas, slippers and eye shades for a good rest. They also provided cosmetic bags with Bulgari perfume or cologne, Bulgari lotion and face emulsion or after shave, refreshing towels, toothbrush and toothpaste, comb, tissues, deodorant and razor (for men only). Our attentive flight attendants prepared our beds once we were ready to get some sleep with a mattress, comforter, and fluffy pillow. Stars light up the ceiling, which gives a dreamy effect after the cabin lights go off.
Prior to getting some much needed sleep, we made sure to indulge in a gourmet meal and some wine. I opted to start with the Heirloom Tomato and Mozzarella salad served with focaccia croutons and balsamic vinaigrette paired with a glass of Robert Weil Keidricher Reisling from Germany. I chose the healthy option of Seared Sea Bass Fillet as my entree served with salsa verde, peperonata, chard and crushed potatoes with shallots. I finished off my delectable meal with a glass of dessert wine- Chateau Doisy Daene from Bordeux, France and a slice of caramel and chocolate tarte served with dark chocolate sauce. Bertaut chose red wine and the Traditional Arabic Mezze for his starter which was a spread of local savory dishes including baba ghanouj, garlic prawns, tabouleh, herbed labneh, houmous, potato Harry and stuffed vine leaves, warm mini Sihanouk, chicken kibbeh and spinach fatayer. He then enjoyed the Lamb Kofta served with tomato sauce and vermicelli rice. He finished his meal with a scoop of wonderful strawberry ice cream (sorry, we forgot to take a photo of that before he gobbled it down).
At the end of our five-star flight, a fancy bus for First Class customers awaited us to drive us to the terminal in Dubai. It had nice leather seats and more than enough space and comfort to transfer like a celebrity from the plane to the airport.
In conclusion, we enjoyed excellent service on the Boeing 777 flight from Milan to Dubai in the deluxe First Class cabin. The food, wine and champagne were exceptional and plentiful, and always served with a smile. The suites were comfortable and well appointed to provide a relaxing and splendid flight, with anything we needed at the touch of a button from the attentive cabin crew. We felt somewhat disappointed in the lack of bar and lounge that the Airbus A380 offered on our previous flight from NYC to Milan, which didn’t give us the opportunity to mingle with other passengers over drinks and appetizers. We were also let down that the bathrooms were standard after enjoying the enormous and extravagant bathrooms with showers on the A380. Despite those very minor disappointments in the First Class cabin’s amenities, we thoroughly enjoyed our flight and have nothing but positive reviews of the cabin crew and first class suites.
