On our visit to Miami and the Florida Keys, we took a safari tour to look for alligators in the Everglades National Park. We booked our tour with Everglades Safari Park and had a blast exploring part of the 1.5 million-acre wetlands preserve on an airboat tour.
You are going to want to use some earplugs especially if you sit close to the giant fans as the ride can get pretty loud. It won’t be anything serious enough to take away from your experience as you take in the Everglades sights, looking for signs of gators.
The wetlands were full of life with alligators discretely showing signs of their presence, just peeking out over the surface of the water. Others would scatter as soon as they heard our airboat approaching. The Everglades National Park was booming with wildlife but all I could think of during our ride was that there would be no way I would get in the water should anything happen to our ride. Too many sci-fi movies may be to blame, but I was a little nervous sitting on the edge of the boat, thinking a giant gator was going to leap out of the water and eat me alive.
After riding around for about 40 minutes, we were taken back to the center where the tour company had an alligator show. The staff educated us about alligators and fed them. You could not pay me all the money in the world to do that job. They didn’t have quite the enthusiasm as Steven Irwin, but appeared to enjoy what they did.
We had a great time getting a taste of the Everglades with the Everglades Safari Park. We have newfound respect for these prehistoric creatures and pray that we never come face to face with any in the wild.
