We stayed at Mezzatorre Resort & Spa in Ischia Italy during our kid-free visit to the Amalfi Coast. The resort is perfect for a romantic getaway, set in a stunning cove overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea with thermal pools, breathtaking sunsets, and a cliffside seawater pool. As members of the Leading Hotels of the World, we were able to use our award night certificates for two free nights at this gorgeous Ischia hotel. If you’re looking for where to stay in Ischia, read our thorough review of Hotel Mezzatorre Ischia. A hidden gem tucked away from the crowds of the Amalfi Coast and Capri and the only Leading Hotel on the island, Mezzatorre Resort and Spa is the best place to stay in Ischia.

Booking one of the best hotels in Ischia Italy for free
We decided to stay at the Mezzatorre after staying at several inspirational Leading Hotels of The World (LHW) on the Amalfi Coast such as Le Sirenuse in Positano, Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento, and Santa Caterina Hotel in Amalfi. We initially booked just one night but decided to extend our stay while on the ferry to this island on the Bay of Naples known for its thermal spas. Since we made our decision within an hour of reaching the island, there were no LHW reward nights available. However, our excellent agent worked its magic and was able to help us redeem our second reward night saving us well over $1,000 in the process.
Perks For LHW Members at Mezzatorre Resort and Spa Ischia
As Unlimited members of the LHW program, our perks included upgrade priority at arrival, daily continental breakfast, a complimentary 4-course dinner and a $50 off voucher for the spa. The LHW has since switched from a reward night program to a points based program for redemptions, and no longer provides the 4-course dinner to LHW members.
Location of Mezzatorre Resort & Spa
Mezzatorre is located between the towns of Lacco Ameno and Forio on Ischia island, just 18 miles from the bustling port city of Naples. Ischia is much less popular than nearby Capri, which means less crowds and an incredibly peaceful stay. The island is known for its healing properties thanks to its volcanic soil and thermal waters, which can be enjoyed at the hotel’s spa. We took a ferry from Naples, which took about an hour, and then drove about 20 minutes to the oceanside resort.

Entrance to Mezzatorre Hotel and Spa
The resort is surrounded by a vast pinewood forest on a private bay overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. We parked our car and then took a ride down the narrow road leading to the resort on a golf cart. The entrance feels like it’s out of a fairytale, with a tent reminiscent of a medieval castle welcoming guests to the lobby. We stopped to enjoy the spectacular views of Mt. Epomeo, the sea, and Mt. Vesuvius in the distance and instantly started to relax. Words can’t describe the breathtaking views from the resort and photos can’t even do it justice, but we’ll do our best to convey its majestic beauty. Mezzatorre is one of the most relaxing resorts we’ve visited and was perfect for our romantic getaway without the kids.
The lobby featured vibrant couches and modern art that was part of a semi-permanent art collection that cycles throughout the resort as pieces are sold. To be honest, we weren’t fans of the art on display during our visit, but found the decor in the guest rooms to be very elegant. We had a good laugh when Bertaut realized his superman tank top matched the superman art adorning the lobby.
Historic Watchtower
Mezzatorre Resort was named after its 16th-century historic watchtower, which has been carefully restored. The tower was built centuries ago to watch out for pirates and now houses the spa, a lounge and work area, and a third of the resort’s guest rooms. We found the lounge area especially peaceful with its plush couches and elegant white decor.
The other guest rooms are located throughout the property with either garden or sea views. The watchtower has a lovely courtyard with spectacular views, where we enjoyed live piano music in the evening after dinner.
The watchtower lounge area had a room with a computer for those needing to get some work done, but hopefully it’s rarely needed since Mezzatorre is the kind of place guests come to escape the stress of work. Just off the work area is a terrace with another stellar view of the bay and mountains. So at least if you have to work, you can just step out on the terrace and unwind as soon as you’re done.
Guest rooms
We stayed in one of the guest rooms outside the watchtower with a garden view called a Double Terrace Park View room. Our room measured 258 square feet and featured a private terrace with lounge chairs and a small table. The king size bed was blissfully comfortable and the canopy overhead gave it a royal medieval feel. The neutral hues of white and gold were calming and refined. Large wardrobes on either side of the doors to the terrace gave us ample space for our belongings. The hotel left a welcome gift on the table for us of fresh fruit and a locally made liquor thanks to our Leading Hotels of the World Unlimited Membership.
Cliffside pool
The seawater cliffside pool is one of the best places to relax at Mezzatorre Hotel. There is not an actual beach, but rather steps that lead into the sea for a refreshing dip. We spent an afternoon lounging by the pool and swimming in its thermally heated water.
Thermal Spa
We received a $50 off voucher for the Mezzatorre spa during check-in, so decided to use it on a couples massage. We opted for the outdoor massage to enjoy the serene views and the gentle sea breeze. Bertaut had a really good massage, but I was disappointed with my massage therapist who basically just rubbed on oil with very little pressure. I said something mid-way through the massage and she improved, but it was still disappointing for a 5-star hotel spa. At least the setting was sublime.
The Ischia thermal spa features 3 indoor hydrotherapy pools fed by the hotel’s private thermal spring, which are known to treat health problems including respiratory diseases, rheumatism, and dermatitis. However, we were surprised that the thermal pools were not complimentary for hotel guests nor spa guests and required an additional charge to access them. We did not try them since we preferred to spend our time in the sunny outdoor pool, which is thermally heated.
Dining at Mezzatorre Hotel
The resort offers 2 restaurants, La Baia which overlooks the pool and bay, and the more formal La Torre, which has both indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the bay. During our visit, the formal restaurant was called Chandelier and that’s where we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast buffet. We sat outside and soaked in more of the relaxing views while we enjoyed our breakfast.
The breakfast buffet included an assortment of pastries, bread, spreads, fresh fruit, fresh juice, cheese, yogurt, cereal, charcuterie, hot dishes, and even champagne. We were also able to order eggs, coffee and tea. The extensive buffet selection was similar to the other Leading Hotels we stayed in on the Amalfi Coast, including Le Sirenuse and Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, which also boasted incredible views and bountiful breakfast buffets.
As Unlimited members of Leading Hotels of the World at the time of our visit, we also received a complimentary 4-course dinner at Chandelier. It was the most generous amenity of all the LHW hotels we’ve stayed in to date, since typically the extra amenity for unlimited members is a complimentary afternoon tea. Since the LHW program changed after our visit, the hotel no longer offers complimentary dinner but still provides breakfast.
Fitness Room
We took a quick photo of the fitness room but were too busy relaxing to work out at Mezzatorre. 😉 We thought the selection of cardio and strength training equipment was sufficient for anyone wanting to burn some vacation calories or bulk up.
Exploring the Mezzatorre Park
We took some time to explore the grounds and hiking paths of Mezzatorre Hotel, which sits on 17 acres of pine wood forest and surveys the sea. Sunsets on the island are spectacular, so make sure not to miss it, preferably with a glass of wine.
There’s an interesting religious site within walking distance that’s worth a visit called the Sanctuary of Madonna di Zaro, where miracles have taken place. It is said that the Virgin Mary has appeared here numerous times and has left messages of peace.
Last words on Hotel Mezzatorre Ischia
Mezzatorre Hotel and Thermal Spa is one of the best hotels in Ischia, arguably THE BEST as the only Leading Hotel of the World on the island. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there, where we slowed down and fully unwound. We typically are very adventurous during our travels, spending little time at our hotel and most of our time out exploring. However, we barely left Mezzatorre and took full advantage of its calming atmosphere. It was exactly what we needed during our romantic kid-free vacation to recharge before heading back home to the daily grind.
Although children are allowed at the resort, we wouldn’t bring ours here until they are older and less impulsive. We would hate to be “that family” with the loud energetic kids ruining someone’s peaceful getaway. For couples looking to luxuriate, decompress, and reconnect, Mezzatorre is exactly what the doctor ordered.
