We love to travel, but one of the downsides of traveling the world (across many time zones) is jet lag, aka travel fatigue. After seriously struggling with jet lag symptoms during and after our trip to Japan a few months ago, a friend told us about AYO light therapy glasses. They are a wearable LED blue light therapy device that helps you recover from jet lag 2-3 times faster. AYO glasses are futuristic looking and much easier than dragging around a LED light therapy machine. We were skeptical of their claims to beat jet lag, so AYO sent us a few pairs to test out on our trip that literally took us around the world (from Washington D.C. to Dubai, Oman, Maldives, Hong Kong, San Francisco, and finally back home to Baltimore.) There was no better time to put these blue light therapy glasses to the test. We happily discovered that they really do work! AYO wearables help with so much more than just jet lag, including energy boosts, improving your sleep, and even treating seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and depression. Read our AYO glasses review with answers to all your questions and find out why we are raving about the new jet lag cure! Buy a pair for yourself (or give someone the perfect gift) and save $50 with our AYO discount code WTA. Now let us tell you more about why we LOVE these wearable light therapy glasses! We hope our AYO light therapy review provides helpful information on how to get over jet lag because jet lagging is no way to spend your precious vacation.
What is jet lag?
Which world traveler do you know who hasn’t found himself saying “I am jet lagged” at some point? Jet lag is also known as desynchronosis, travel fatigue, or jet fatigue. Jet lag results from a disruption in the body’s circadian rhythms. Basically, it occurs when the body’s internal clock is out of sync with cues from a new time zone, such as daylight and meal times. Jet lag tends to be worse when traveling from West to East since you are losing hours instead of gaining hours. For example, when we flew from DC to Dubai on Emirates First Class, we arrived at what would normally be our bedtime. However, it was 8am in Dubai and we had the whole day ahead of us. Jet lag gets worse the more time zones you cross. Having just crossed 9 time zones, getting over jet lag was not going to be easy.
What are jet lag symptoms?
Jet lag symptoms include fatigue, insomnia, early waking, irritability, lethargy, disorientation, nausea, depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, constipation, diarrhea, moodiness, and a general feeling of not being well. Sort of like a hangover, but only worse! We hate jet lag, and the older we get, the more difficult it is to recover. Plus, having 2 young children who are waking up in the middle of the night when there’s nothing to do is no fun!
How long does jet lag last?
Jet lag duration varies depending on how many time zones you crossed. It typically takes up to a day to recover for each time zone crossed, but usually about half the number of time zones crossed. So when we traveled home to Baltimore from Hong Kong, we were looking at 7-13 days of being still jet lagged. Thankfully, we had a little trick up our sleeves this time, and it was AYO jet lag glasses! Jet lag recovery has never looked so good! 😉
How do you cure jet lag?
Now for the million dollar question for us travel addicts- how to recover from jet lag faster? There are tons of articles out there with jet lag homeopathic remedies and other suggestions. Jet lag remedies include drinking a lot of water, no jet lag pills, taking melatonin, avoiding alcohol, getting exercise, sleeping only when it’s time to sleep in the new time zone, etc. We’ve tried pretty much all the jet lag tips (except we aren’t very good at avoiding alcohol when we’re flying LOL) and were still suffering until we found AYO.
AYO wearables are the best thing we’ve discovered for how to get rid of jet lag. We wish we had found them sooner before our trip to Japan and Singapore a few months ago when our butts were dragging for weeks! Seriously, overcoming jet lag is no joke!
GoAYO studies have shown that AYO light therapy glasses help people recover from jet lag 2-3 times faster. When you have literally flown around the world and passed every single time zone like us, then AYO is your new best friend. It is also perfect for flight attendants, pilots, and frequent business travelers. To be honest, AYO is great for anyone who wants more energy and better sleep on a daily basis.
I’m remembering my days as a new mom when our kids were waking up around the clock and attached to me nonstop. If I had AYO glasses back then, I think I would have survived the newborn stage with much more sanity and dignity. Wow that just gave me an idea! AYO wearables would make the best baby shower gift ever! Sorry, let me get back on track.
What’s blue light therapy & how do jet lag light therapy glasses work?
We’re not scientists, so we’re not the best people to explain how does light therapy work. So we’re going to defer to GoAyo to explain their jet lag light therapy. They use cutting-edge technology based on Nobel Prize-winning chronobiology research to reset our circadian rhythm. “AYO comes in the form of a blue-light emitting wearable, completely controlled by the AYO App with smart programs for Sleep, Travel, and Energy.” The advanced blue light therapy “has a special diffusion technology with multiple lighting levels. It is a safe and scientifically-backed blue lighting. Easy on the eyes, UV & infrared free, with low glare.”
It basically resets your internal clock to help you adjust to a new time zone. The blue LED light mimics sunlight without the damaging effects of UV and infrared. The blue light signals to our bodies to suppress the level of melatonin, which makes us feel more awake and energized in a natural way. AYO gives an energy boost much more effective than caffeine to help you get through your day, recover from jetlag, or adjust your sleep patterns. We can vouch for them after putting them to the ultimate test, and they work wonders! If you’re ready to buy your own pair now, click here.
When can I wear my blue light glasses?
The beauty of these glasses is that you can wear them anywhere and anytime since they do not distract your eyesight. We used them driving from Dubai to Oman after a 13 hour flight when we should have been sleeping according to our internal clocks, although it was daytime in our new time zone. The glasses kept us from falling asleep at the wheel and helped us adjust to the new time zone. We take road trips often with our kids, so these glasses will come in handy for those long drives to keep us from nodding off at the wheel.
We’ve also worn our blue light therapy at home while reading, doing chores, on flights (all the flight attendants wanted a pair on our Emirates First Class flight), while watching TV, and even while out and about. I had my blue light glasses on at the bounce house soon after getting home from Hong Kong. I got some curious looks from people, but I felt energized enough to bounce with my kids afterwards. Even 6’6 Bertaut joined in on the bouncing fun!
Now that we’ve fully recovered from our jet lag, we are still using our wearable light therapy glasses for energy boosts whenever we feel tired and it’s not time to sleep yet. I love being able to get past that afternoon zombie phase without caffeine or a nap. As much as I love taking naps, it’s a rare day when I have time or the opportunity for one. Remember, we have a 3 year old and a 5 year old, so time is a precious commodity and we need our energy to keep up with them!
Are AYO glasses comfortable?
We find our glasses comfortable and non-intrusive to our activities. AYO Wearables are so lightweight and well-designed that they are extremely easy to wear. They only weigh 1.2 ounces and one size fits all.
Can I wear AYO with glasses and/or contacts?
Yes, AYO has a fully adjustable nosepiece that allows wearing AYO over prescription glasses. You can wear them with contacts too.
Are there any LED light therapy dangers? Is it safe?
AYO is safe for the eyes and has been tested with over 10,000 analyzed sessions. I definitely wouldn’t wear anything that might harm these baby blues. 😉 We asked AYO and there are no side effects either.
Can children use AYO jet lag glasses?
To be on the safe side, AYO blue light glasses are recommended for ages 18 and up since children’s eyes are still developing. However, we heard that some people use the glasses on their children. If you want to use these with your children, consult with your pediatrician first. We have not tried these with our kids but definitely plan to discuss with our pediatrician prior to our next time zone-hopping vacation with the kids. It’s good to know that kids adjust to new time zones faster than adults, so even if we alone can use the glasses, that is still a big help on family vacations.
Charge your light therapy glasses on the go!
We love that AYO comes with a long-life and energy efficient battery and a rechargeable case. Just fold up your glasses and put them in the hard shell case and they will charge on the go. The protective case makes it especially easy to take the glasses on vacation and keep them from getting damaged. I have started keeping my glasses (in the protective case) in my purse so I can use them when I’m out running errands and need an energy boost. That brings me to the next topic! AYO helps with so much more than just jet lag. If you don’t travel across time zones much, keep reading to find out other reasons to love AYO light therapy glasses.
Benefits of light therapy on energy, mood, & sleep
Get an AYO energy boost anywhere!
I (Alexis) throw my case in my purse when I’m heading out for a long day. Instead of an afternoon dose of caffeine, I put on my AYO glasses for 20-30 minutes and I’m good to go. It seriously works that well! I was so tired the other afternoon and thought about laying down for a nap, but I had too much work to do. Instead I put on my glasses and after my AYO energy boost I was ready to tackle my to-do list. It honestly is hard to believe, but once you try it you will see.
I thought perhaps it could be psychological or a placebo effect, so I went looking for reviews of AYO glasses to see if other people were having the same effect. Reviews were extremely positive and everyone was saying how these glasses really work! Even doctors, airline pilots and scientists were praising how effective they are, and how they work better than any other light therapy glasses on the market.
AYO provides light therapy for Depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder
AYO is not only proven to help with jet lag and energy, but also for boosting your mood. We live in Baltimore and our winters can get downright depressing with the gloomy days and limited sunshine. I don’t know about you, but I could certainly use some light to brighten me up on those dark and dreary winter days. Since AYO is a light therapy device, it is also effective for treating SAD and Depression.
I (Alexis) am a mental health therapist, so this is extremely exciting for me! People with SAD have been using light box therapy for years as a form of blue light therapy for depression. Now AYO has given an option for wearable blue light therapy at home or on the go that makes it so much easier for people to treat their symptoms anywhere. SAD light therapy has never been so flexible.
If you struggle with depression, give these seasonal affective disorder glasses (SAD glasses) a try and please let us know how it goes. I would love to hear how SAD light therapy with AYO glasses is working for you! I personally don’t have clinical depression, but have close family members and friends who do, and can’t wait to see how AYO helps them. AYO glasses were voted as the best light therapy device for treating seasonal affective disorder and depression from LightTherapyDevice.com, which gives unbiased led light therapy reviews. We also checked the reviews on Amazon, and so far everyone else is also raving about these glasses. The glasses earned an Amazon’s Choice badge as well, which means Amazon thinks they are the best light therapy glasses on the market.
Improve your sleep with AYO blue light sleep therapy
Maybe you don’t have problems with your mood, but how about your sleep? Do you have trouble falling asleep or waking up? These insomnia glasses provide blue light sleep therapy to help you improve your sleep quality and habits within 5 days. Just use the Sleep program in the Go AYO app and it will help you set up your “biological alarm” so you don’t even need an alarm clock. These glasses can help you wake up recharged instead of hitting snooze again and again. The sleep program will also help you adjust your sleep schedule so that your body is ready to fall asleep at your desired time. AYO’s sleep program improves the quality of your sleep by syncing your sleep rhythm with your natural body rhythm. As parents of young kids that like to creep into our bed in the middle of the night, we certainly can use something that helps us sleep better on a daily basis. This mama gets grouchy when she doesn’t get enough sleep! So these blue light sleep glasses have been a godsend!
Using AYO for shift work
This doesn’t apply to us, but there’s a lot of people who do shift work and get their internal clocks all out of whack. AYO can help adjust sleep cycles to better deal with rotating shifts. Some reviews I read said that these glasses helped prevent people from falling asleep at work and saved them from losing their jobs.
How to use light therapy glasses with the Go AYO App
The glasses are bluetooth activated and controlled by the Go AYO app for smart phones. The app asks you to enter your regular sleep cycles to give you a personalized schedule according to your lifestyle and preferences. When you travel, you enter your departure city, flight departure time, arrival city, and flight arrival time. The app then uses an algorithm to calculate when are the best times to use your AYO and to avoid light to help you adjust to your new time zone. You simply put on your glasses and tap the play button on the Go AYO app.
We loved how the app alerted us whenever it was time to use our AYO. We were busy exploring and sightseeing and needed reminders for our light therapy. One thing to consider, you need internet access to set up your preferences and flight info. We had a few instances where my AYO didn’t want to run the travel program because my smart phone was not connected to wifi. It still allowed me to start an energy boosting session, but it required me to discontinue my travel program. That was only an issue when we were in the middle of the Arabian desert without wifi for a day.
Since the glasses only operate with the Go AYO app, make sure to keep your smart phone charged or you won’t be able to run your program. We always travel with a power bank so our smart phones never run out of battery. If you don’t have a Power Bank, we highly recommend you get one. It’s one of our travel necessities and was also included in our list of useful travel gifts, to which we will now add the AYO wearables. Honestly, we think these are one of the most helpful and practical gifts you could ever give to someone who frequently travels across time zones.
Conclusion of our AYO glasses review
So you can probably tell by now that we are huge fans of the AYO wearable light therapy glasses. We wish we had discovered these sooner to help us recover from jet lag on each of our vacations that crossed time zones. Even when we’re not traveling, we are using them for energy boosts and better sleep on a daily basis. I was writing this on a dreary overcast day so I put on my glasses for 20 minutes on my way to drop my son off at preschool. After my blue light session, I felt more awake and energized and came home to finish my AYO glasses review. Woohoo! And that’s a wrap. 😉
Please let us know if you have any questions. AYO offers a 14-day moneyback guarantee, a 1-year international warranty, and free express shipping worldwide. So really, what do you have to lose? Try AYO and let us know if they totally rock your world too! We know they are not cheap (currently selling for $299 but you can get $50 off with our AYO discount code WTA), but we think they are absolutely worth the cost. Consider it an investment in your health, because good sleep is fundamental to your wellbeing. Plus, when you’re spending your hard-earned money traveling the world, it’s worth it to feel your best. We felt like crap in Japan due to severe jet lag before we knew about AYO wearables. Alternatively, we felt shockingly good in the Middle East and after our return from Hong Kong on our last vacation thanks to AYO wearables. Don’t take our word for it, though. Test it out yourself.
