What’s on the Andaz menu in Costa Rica?
Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort Reviews of all 3 Restaurants: Rio Bhongo, Chao Pescao, and Ostra
We stayed at the beautiful Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort in Costa Rica this summer for a romantic anniversary celebration. This Hyatt Andaz resort on the Gulf of Papagayo is one of the best places to stay in Costa Rica on the beach. Read all about this Hyatt Papagayo resort that is nestled in the tropical forest in our extremely thorough Andaz Papagayo review. Check out all the incredible things to do in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. While staying at this luxurious Papagayo resort, we dined in all three of their restaurants which feature delicious Costa Rican cuisine. The Andaz Papagayo menu does not disappoint. Here’s our experience dining at Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort. Just to warn you, our Andaz Costa Rica reviews of the restaurants might make you hungry or start salivating. Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us when looking at photos of delicious food. Our Andaz Peninsula Papagayo reviews may also prompt you to spontaneously book a vacation, so proceed with caution. Seriously though, even if you aren’t planning to stay at Andaz Papagayo, it’s worth a visit for cocktails and live music at Chao Pescao Bar or a delicious seafood dinner at Ostra. Even the Kardashians dined at Ostra during their vacation in Costa Rica. If it’s good enough for them, then you know it must be good. 😉
Ostra
Ostra is the resort’s finest restaurant and has a very romantic atmosphere with candles and strings of lights. It was designed to emulate a private residence and has views of the tropical forest and Culebra Bay. Ostra focuses on Costa Rican seafood and is one of the best fine dining restaurants in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica.

We had a wonderful dinner there that started with welcome cocktails served as soon as we arrived. Next we enjoyed mouth-watering ceviche, the chef’s specialty. We’ve had ceviche before, but never like this! You can pick what you want in your ceviche as the chef prepares it in front of you at the culinary station. You can choose from shrimp, octopus, sea bass, snapper, grouper, and tuna and then add different vegetables and sauces. Not only was it delicious , but it was a beautifully plated. We could eat that every day!

Our main dishes were delicious as well, although we had such big servings of ceviche that we couldn’t finish our meals. Bertaut ordered seared tuna with couscous and crustacean sauce. I (Alexis) opted for Green Curry Andino, which came with grilled sea bas, octopus, shrimp, and calamari. Everything was fresh and flavorful and the service was great. Prices are $18-20 for ceviche and main courses from $22 to $44.

Chao Pescao
Chao Pescao is a tapas and cocktail bar with live music and a mixology class on certain nights of the week. We ate there a few times during our stay and enjoyed the lively ambience, tasty food and creative cocktails. It’s the best place to socialize and mingle with other guests at the resort. We definitely think you should check it out and take the mixology class ($40 per person). Diego will make you a one-of-a-kind drink and may even bring out a torch to put the finishing touch on your cocktail. He takes great pride in his creations, which are not just drinks but works of art.
For an idea on prices, cocktails are $12-13 and small plates start at $11 and can go as high as $34 for entree size portions. This is the mid-range restaurant at Andaz and seemed very popular with couples.

Rio Bhongo
Rio Bhongo is Andaz Peninsula Papagayo’s most casual and popular restaurant since breakfast is served here and it is right next to the family pool. It is an open-air restaurant overlooking Culebra Bay and the tropical forest that surrounds Andaz. We loved eating breakfast here every morning while watching the monkeys swing in the trees, hearing birds chirp, and gazing out at the relaxing view. It was even better that our breakfast was free since we are Hyatt Globalists.

American Breakfast ($32) includes Latin Market (see menu below) options plus a bountiful buffet with everything from fresh squeezed juice, omelette station, pastries, gluten-free options, breads, meats, cheeses, yogurt, cereal and all sorts of hot Costa Rican dishes and more traditional breakfast options like waffles, pancakes, crepes and eggs. Continental Breakfast ($19) includes cold selections from the buffet and Barista specials. Or you can order off the Latin Market menu if you’re not as hungry or don’t want to spend as much on breakfast. We tried a few options like Crispy Pork Belly Benedict and Coconut French toast with cinnamon and banana compote. They were very good and we left breakfast stuffed every morning. I don’t know about you, but buffets are dangerous for me! I always eat too much!

However, the buffet offers so much that you really don’t even need to order anything from the menu. We took pictures of everything so here it goes. Prepare to get hungry for some Costa Rican food!

There’s a kids menu as well with coloring activities to keep the kids entertained, which we always appreciate.

The barista makes tea and fresh coffee concoctions every morning. The coffee menu offers many options from simple roasts to naughtier options like batido divino with ice cream, amaretto, chocolate and whipped cream. We tried traditional Costa Rican coffee (which is known as some of the best coffee in the world), frappuccino, affogato, and a very rich hot chocolate that isn’t even on the menu. The barista will also blend you up a fruit smoothie.

We also ate dinner one night at Rio Bhongo. It was pouring down rain during a tropical thunderstorm the night we ate there, so it was very cool to eat at the open-air restaurant and hear the storm all around us. Rio Bhongo seemed to be where all the families with kids ate since it’s located next to the family pool and is the most casual. This restaurant is the most affordable for dinner with main courses starting at $16. We enjoyed roasted sea bass with asparagus, cherry tomatoes, garlic, red onions, palm heart, and Costa Rican lemon-beurre blanc. It was delectable.

Last words on Andaz Papagayo Restaurants
By the end of our stay at Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort, we had dined at all 3 restaurants. We enjoyed all our meals and can recommend different restaurants depending on your mood and preferences. For a quiet romantic dinner and if you like seafood, go to Ostra. It’s the finest restaurant at Andaz Papagayo and perhaps the best of the Gulf of Papagayo hotels. Remember, the Kardashians went there for dinner. For a lively night out with music, cocktails and dancing, go to Chao Pescao. You just may stay until the bar closes, like we did. Better yet, have dinner at one of the other restaurants and then head there for after-dinner drinks at the bar (which we also did). The cocktails really are THAT GOOD! Rio Bhongo is a good option for a casual lunch or dinner, especially if you have kids with you. The menu has a lot of options like salads, sandwiches, fish, meats off the grill, and Costa Rican specialties. They also have weekly specials like BBQ night.
